At just nine years of age, and with just two years of racing experience,
Christopher Larson is already showing prowess in a racecar, perhaps
legendary Jud Larson.
The quarter-midget was old, and the Larson family was told that the
boy could probably not be competitive racing the outdated machine.
However, his father and grandfather did some work on the car and built
new engines, and hoped for a respectable showing.
And in 2007, at just seven years of age, young Christopher climbed
behind the wheel of that old racer and began winning races. He
launched his racing career with the River City Quarter Midget
Association in Austin, Texas, and in his debut season he claimed the
Texas Shootout Championship (Austin, TX and San Antonio, TX) as well
as the RCQMA Championship (Austin, TX) in Junior Novice (a division
for ages 5 – 8 years).
Midway through the 2007 season Christopher moved up to the Junior
Honda class. He finished first in points for the 2nd half of the season in
that class. And, the climax of the season was being voted the RCQMA
Rookie of the Year.
Last season, Larson moved up to the Senior Honda class (for ages 9 –
16 years). He became the 2008 Region 6 Monza Champion (Kansas,
Oklahoma and Texas). All in all, in 2008 he set Senior Honda track
records : three at RCQMA, one at the San Antonio Monza race and one
at the Tulsa Monza race. He was also voted the 2008 RCQMA
Sportsman of the Year.
After earning championships for two seasons in a quarter-midget that
supposedly too old to be competitive, Christopher’s father is building
him a new car for 2009, complete with a custom chassis, body and a
new engine for the Light 160 class. He will compete in the two classes
locally, and in the Grand Nationals in Alabama.
